Pentacle
Tools are what wiccans/witches use to focus their energy.
Tools are not needed to practice any spells or rituals. They just help
in focusing the energy and making the spells stronger and last longer.
Personally i don't own even half of these tools (I'm 19 and therefore have a very limited income)
but I perform spells and rituals all the time using just my mind. So like I said before, tools are helpful,
but not always needed. So don't say to yourself, "Gee, this sounds like the right path for me, but
I just don't have the income to be buying tools, candles, and incense all the time!" You don't need them!
Yes, it helps but your spells will still work without them! For those interested and have the ability to buy things
because they want to. A very good friend of mine owns a wiccan supply store. Her prices are very resonable and she has
some REALLY great stuff! Her URL is www.wytchworks.com She has just about everything u could ever need.
Anyway, enough of my babbling, here is my list of tools and their elements.
Book of Shadows-Also called a BOS, this is a book used for writing down information. Mine is a black and white composition notebook. Some wiccans keep their BOS on a floppy disk.
Altar-working place; coffee table, chest, or table set for this purpose only.
Always have forward facing East.
Cauldron-represents water; black cast iron. can range from 3 inches wide to 3 feet wide
can be used for anything, from burning incense, to floating flower petals in water.
Mortar and Pestal-used for crushing herbs, incenses, etc. Looks like a bowl with a mini baseball bat.
Pentagram-AKA Druid's foot, Wizards foot, Witches foot, etc. Basic 5 pointed star with a circle surrounding it.
Many different ideas stem from this item. It represents the 5 elements (earth, air, fire, water, akasha(spirit)), it's a
symbol of protection, etc.
Wand-represents air; naturally formed wood/tree branches, or dowels with crystals and/or wooden beads.
Staff-represents air; wood, shoulder height, symbol of magickal knowledge and the right to petition dieties
Head/Arm Band-represents spirit, silver colored jewelry
Goblet-represents water; used for holding water and/or wine (if you are of age)
Censur-represents fire; Censur is basically a fancy word for incense burner
Athame-represents fire; Athame is a black-handled knife usually the blade is no longer than the length of your fingers and palm.
This is where some of the difference between styles is shown. Some say that Athames are used for cutting water only and should not
be used to cut anything else, and the blade should be dulled. Others say that you can use it for cutting. Personally, i don't use mine for cutting.
Bolline-represents fire; Bolline is a white-handled knife similar to the Athame. In the styles that say Athames are not used for cutting, they say to use the Bolline
for any cutting you need (for gathering herbs, or customizing your wand, carving into candles, etc.)
Sword-represents fire; tool of command, much like the Staff
Candles-represents air and fire; see the Colors page for more details on meanings
Herbs-represents earth; see HERBS for more info.
Stones-represents earth; good conductors for magick
Amulet-jewelry with magickal/personal connections such as a Pentagram, an Anhk, Solomon's Seal (6pointed star) etc.
Robe-clothing with a specific color to aid magick concentration.
Name-private, not revealed except to those you practice magick with. Much like in some Native American cultures, you have two names.
One is revealed and one is not, because of a belief that the latter of the two holds special powers and if revealed will lose its powers.
